Basically, there are two seasons when the whales visit and migrate to Costa Rica. First Season late December to late March. The population swims from the Oregon coast to Central America toward the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. In January and February, the chance to see whales is almost guaranteed. However, the whale population is lower during this season than during the second season. Therefore, the chances of spotting whales are smaller.

From the end of July to end of October Spotting the whales in Uvita is easy during this period. The baby whales can also be spotted then. The mother whale prefers Uvita because of the warm water and tranquility, making it a good place to have babies and grow quickly.

From our own experience, we have learned that the tour is worth it, even when you don't see whales. Obviously, the tour is better when you do see these impressive animals; most people will label the tour as a unique and once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The Humpback whale and Bryde's whale are most common in the area. These huge mammals can reach up to 50 feet long; the females are somewhat bigger than the males. Despite their enormous size, they are able to jump out of the water providing a spectacular show for those lucky enough to be there at the right time. Another great experience, which is more likely to witness during the tour, is watching the offspring swim and play beside their huge mothers.
