Private surfing lessons at Playa Jaco

All private lessons are divided into three segments: surf foundation, surf techniques, and surf arts.  The first segment is the beach drills, where you will learn the basics of surfing and safety techniques. These drills are based on the main fundamentals of surfing and special attention is paid to safety. By the end of the beach drills, you will feel confident paddling, pushing, and standing up on your board, and you will be ready to hit the water!

The second fase of yout surfing lessons

The second part of the surf lesson is in shallow water where your instructor will lead you through the maneuvers you learned on the beach. You will get the feel of lying on your board in the water, paddling out of the white water, pushing over the tops of waves, and finally jumping on your board and riding the white wash to shore. If this is your first time on a surfboard, you will have the thrill a lifetime riding on a wave for the first time!

Surfing with a safety first mentality

Waves in Costa Rica can be very high, so you want to listen to your instructor. If your instructor thinks you need more time practicing on the white water, no worries, he or she will continue to help you get comfortable. If your instructor thinks you're ready for a real wave, he or she will help you get past the surf and into the calm open waters where you can catch a cool wave.

Surfing in Jaco Beach for intermediate surfers

The Waves at Jaco are strong enough to keep intermediate surfers entertained, but not so powerful as to intimidate newbies. Surfers of all levels enjoy riding the waves at Jaco; no matter what time of year or what direction they come from, they're best ridden at high tide with swells from the northwest or southwest.

Be careful, though—during large swells the undertow can be strong, so even if you're an experienced surfer, be cautious. Note: Playa Jaco usually gets busy on weekends. So if you prefer more peace, you should go during the week.

Why is Jaco beach a good spot to surf?

The waves at Jacó reach their maximum height when they're chest-high to around one foot overhead, as larger waves tend to close out.
