Puntarenas is Costa Rica's largest province. The province covers not only a huge portion of the Pacific Ocean (including the Nicoya Peninsula's southern region), but also a large portion of the interior.

The province's capital, Puntarenas serves as a vital junction. This city is an important transit hub for passengers heading to the Central Pacific coast, as it connects the Nicoya Peninsula to the mainland by boat. Monteverde is a well-known cloud forest reserve. The American Quakers who sought safety in Monteverde (which is also easily accessible from La Fortuna) have made the town famous.
