Zapotal Beach is a remote and beautiful light gray sand beach with calm waters, located in the Guanacaste province. Is a very quiet beach, ideal for a relaxing vacation, away from city noise, perfect to practice some water sports such as diving, snorkeling or fishing.
Getting to Zapotal beach in Guanacaste:
From San José
Drive north to Puntarenas and then follow the Panamerican highway until you reach Liberia. There, turn right and continue for 8 km (5 miles), after the DO IT Center take the next exit to Sardinal on your right. Continue on this road for about 20 km (12 miles) until you get to Zapotal beach parking lot. This route requires a total of 4 to 5 hours from San José.
From Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR)
Drive south to Santa Cruz, after the DO IT Center take the next exit to Sardinal on your right. Continue on this road for about 20 km (12 miles) until you get to Zapotal beach parking lot.
By bus
There are no buses to Playa Zapotal, however you can take a bus from the route San José – Liberia, which takes about 5 hours (Pulmitan Liberia, 2222-1650 / 26663818) and then take another bus Liberia – Sardinal (La Pampa, 2665-5891 / 2686-7245). From Sardinal you should take a taxi or walk about 20 km (12 miles) to Zapotal beach. The other option is to take a taxi or drive from Liberia to Zapotal beach, located at about 40 km (25 miles).
By plane:
You can also take a flight from the Juan Santamaria Airport to the Daniel Oduber airport at Liberia, either with Sansa or Nature Air airlines, both with daily flights. From here you can rent a car and drive or take a taxi to Zapotal beach, which takes about 1.5 hours.
