Samara beach is well known for its beautiful tropical, long, white sand beach with shallow, gentle waters, which is one of the safest and most attractive beaches in Costa Rica. It is very popular with swimmers and surfers, and it is an ideal beach for kids.

Samara beach and its surrounding environs offer tourists an ideal place to relax and have a good time. Here, visitors can find along the strip beach a wide variety of exotic plants and animals, along with a superb coral reef that lies just offshore, and its own picturesque and remote island in the bay called Chora Island.

At Samara beach you can find some of the best water sports activities in the entire country, as well as horseback riding, deep sea fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, paragliding, waterfall visits and canopy tours.

Samara beach is not only a thriving fishing and farming community, but considered by many to be among Costa Rica’s most beautiful beaches with a wide choice of attractive hotels, restaurants, bars and discos. At Samara beach there is always something to do, a party to be found, a wave to catch or simply a shady palm to relax under.

Getting to Samara beach in Guanacaste:

From San José drive north to Puntarenas and then follow the highway towards Liberia until you reach Limonal. Turn left at Tres Hermanas Restaurant and continue to La Amistad bridge and then continue on the same path to Nicoya. Once you reach Nicoya, continue your drive taking the road to Samara passing through Hojancha. This route requires a total of five hours from San Jose.

From Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport (LIR), drive south to Nicoya and from there to Samara passing through Hojancha.

By bus

Take a local bus from San José to Samara, which takes about 5 to 6 hours (Terminal Alfaro, 2222-2666). We recommend buying the ticket a day earlier to be sure your seat is saved.

By plane:

You can also take a flight from the Juan Santamaria Airport to the airport of Samara / Carrillo, either Sansa or Nature Air airlines have daily flights. From here you can rent a car and drive or take a taxi to Samara beach, which takes about 10 minutes.
