La Penca is a very calm and beautiful semi bay white sanded beach with shell and coral fragments and turquoise clear waters, less than 1 km long, bordered by a lush vegetation and rocky points, located in the Guanacaste province.
Although the development of La Penca beach is not very marked, it has all the facilities for visitors to spend a pleasant and peaceful holiday in the sun, enjoying the waves of its waters, walking on the beach or just admiring the beauty of landscape. La Penca Beach is undoubtedly a well hidden treasure, where its estuary and mangrove swamp complement the attractiveness of the place.
Getting to La Penca beach in Guanacaste:
From San José
Drive north to Puntarenas and then follow the highway to Liberia until you reach Belen. There, turn right and continue on the road until you get to Huacas. Once in Huacas, turn right towards Conchal and Flamingo for about 4.5 km (3 miles) until you reach an intersection. Follow the signs to Potrero or La Penca Beach and continue for 4.5 km (3 miles) more until you reach a small commercial center, turn left and continue until you reach La Penca beach. This route requires a total of 4 to 5 hours from San José.
From Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR)
Drive south to Santa Cruz, after the DO IT Center take the next exit to Sardinal on your right. Continue on the road following the signs to RIU Hotel until you get to an intersection that takes you to Potrero beach or the Monkey Trail Canopy Tour. Continue on the road for about 9 km ( miles) until you reach Potrero. Turn right, continue for 100m and then turn left at a small commercial center until you reach La Penca beach.
By bus
Take a bus from the route San José – Huacas – Brasilito- Flamingo – Potrero, making the stop at Potrero beach, which takes about 5 hours (Tralapa, 2221-7202 / 2680-0392). We recommend buying the ticket a day earlier to be sure your seat is saved.
Or you can also take a bus from the route San Jose – Santa Cruz (Alfaro-Tracopa, 2222-2666) or Liberia – Santa Cruz (La Pampa, 2665-5891) and and then take a bus Santa Cruz – Flamingo – Potrero (Empresa El Folclórico, 2680-3161), making the stop at Potrero Beach.
By plane:
You can also take a flight from the Juan Santamaria Airport to the Tamarindo airport, either with Sansa or Nature Air airlines every day. From here you can rent a car and drive or take a taxi to La Penca beach, which takes about 30 minutes.
