Copal is a beautiful white sanded beach with cold blue waters, of about 1.5 km long north up to Punta Copal, located across Bolaños Island, a bird sanctuary in the province of Guanacaste.
It is noteworthy that Copal Beach is in Salinas Bay, one of the ten windiest places in the world, so it has strong waves, being the months from November to May the windiest. For this reason, Copal Beach is the ideal place for both kitesurfing and windsurfing. Copal Beach is also a good place to enjoy sunbathing, walking along the coast or do some sport fishing.
Getting to Copal Beach in La Cruz, Guanacaste:
From San José
Drive north to Puntarenas and then follow the Pan-American highway towards Liberia. Once in Liberia, continue along the same highway for about 55 km (34 miles), turn left towards El Jobo, continue for 10 km (6 miles) turn right towards Copal beach and continue for 1 km (0.6 miles). This route requires a total of 5 to 6 hours from San José.
From Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR)
Drive northeast towards Liberia. Once in Liberia, continue along the same highway for about 55 km (34 miles), turn left towards El Jobo, continue for 10 km (6 miles) turn right towards Copal beach and continue for 1 km (0.6 miles).
By bus
There are no buses to Copal Beach, however you can take a bus from the route San José – La Cruz, which takes about 6 hours (Transportes Deldú, 2256-9072) and then take another bus from the route La Cruz – Puerto Soley – El Jobo, which takes about 30 minutes, departing 3 times a day. From here you can rent a car and drive or take a taxi to Copal beach, which takes about 15 minutes.
Or you can take a bus from the route San José – Liberia, which takes about 5 hours (Pulmitan, 2222-1650), take another bus from the route Liberia – La Cruz (Empresa Arrieta, 2665-7530) which takes about 1 hour, and then take another bus from the route La Cruz – Puerto Soley – El Jobo, which takes about 30 minutes, departing 3 times a day. From here you can rent a car and drive or take a taxi to Copal beach, which takes about 15 minutes. In both cases, we recommend buying the ticket the day before to save your space.
By plane:
You can also take a flight from the Juan Santamaria Airport to the Daniel Oduber airport at Liberia, either with Sansa or Nature Air airlines every day. From here you can rent a car and drive or take a taxi to Copal beach, which takes about 1 hour.
