Bonita Beach, which means Beautiful in Spanish, is a small but beautiful and quiet beach of white sand and crystal blue water surrounded by rock formations and an exotic landscape of dry tropical forest, located in the province of Guanacaste.
Although Bonita Beach is within walking distance of crowded beaches such as Panama and El Coco, it’s rarely visited, making it the perfect destination if you are looking for a little peace and quiet, as Bonita Beach is ideal for cooling off in its calm waters or sunbathe and relax listening to the sound of the sea.
Getting to Bonita Beach in Guanacaste:
From San José
Drive north to Puntarenas and then follow the Pan-American highway until you reach Liberia, turn left and continue for 8 km (5 miles), take the exit to your right, next to the DO IT Center, towards Papagayo and Panama beach. Once in Panama beach, turn right, continue on the road to Hermosa beach for about 2.5 km (1.5 miles), then turn right and continue for 2 km (1 mile) more, until you reach the entrance of an abandoned hotel, where you need to report to a security officer to enter to Bonita Beach. This route requires a total of 5 to 6 hours from San José.
From Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR)
Drive south to Santa Cruz for 8 km (5 miles) and turn right at the DO IT Center to Papagayo or Panama beach. Once in Panama beach, turn right, continue on the road to Hermosa beach for about 2.5 km (1.5 miles), then take another right and continue for 2 km (1 mile) more, until you reach the entrance of an abandoned hotel, where you need to report to a security officer to enter Bonita Beach.
By bus
Take a bus from the route San José – Hermosa beach / Panama beach, which takes about 6 hours (Traslapa, 2221-7202, 2680-0392); or from Libera you can take a bus from the route Liberia – Hermosa beach / Panama beach, which takes about 1 hour (Transportes La Pampa, 2665-5891). From Hermosa beach you can take a taxi to Bonita beach, which takes about 5 minutes. We recommend buying the ticket the day before to ensure your space.
By plane:
You can also take a flight from the Juan Santamaria Airport to the Daniel Oduber airport at Liberia, either with Sansa or Nature Air airlines every day. From here you can rent a car and drive or take a taxi to Bonita beach, which takes about 20 minutes.

In addition, Hermosa Beach is one of the best maintained beaches in Costa Rica, winner of the “Blue Flag” award (Bandera Azul in Spanish) given to beaches that demonstrate high environmental standards and excellent safety facilities.
Hermosa Beach is an uncrowded beach, making it a very relaxing place, perfect for those seeking quality relaxation, peace and tranquility. However, Hermosa Beach is suitable to practice some water sports. In fact, Hermosa Beach is a favorite for swimmers, because of its calm waters. Visitors can also do some snorkeling, Scuba diving, kayaking, making a boat trip and/or sport fishing, horseback riding trips along the beach, ideal to see the beautiful surroundings.
While Hermosa Beach still maintains an overall laidback atmosphere of tranquility, it is the focus of ongoing development. Most of the construction is in charge of large luxury resorts at its northern end, while the South retains a more relaxing atmosphere. In addition, the community services are abundant with a variety of excellent restaurants, bars, travel agencies and shops.
An important point that most tourists need to be aware of is the fact that there are several beaches named “Hermosa” in Costa Rica. The Hermosa beach that is in Puntarenas, near Jaco, is the one famous for being one of the best surfing havens in the country.

Once in Sardinal, continue on the road to Hermosa Beach for about 7 km (4 miles), you should see an entrance to your left, that looks as if was private, you must enter and report to the manager, and continue for 700 m (2,300 ft) to the beach. This route requires a total of 4 to 5 hours from San José.
From Daniel Oduber International Airport (LIR)
Drive south to Santa Cruz , pass the DO IT Center and take the next exit to Sardinal on your right. Once in Sardinal, continue on the road to Hermosa Beach for about 7 km (4 miles) you should see an entrance to your left, that looks as if was private, you must enter and report to the manager, and continue for 700 m (2,300 ft) to the beach.
By bus
Take a bus from the route San José – El Coco Beach, which takes about 5 hours (Pulmitan Liberia, 2222-1650 / 2666-3818). From here you can rent a car and drive or take a taxi to Penca Punta Cacique beach, which takes about 5 minutes. We recommend buying the ticket the day before to ensure your space.
